Carbon Monoxide Awareness!
With the cold weather persisting (after all, it is still winter!), your central heating, fires and other appliances will be on more frequently and longer.
In consequence, all residents are urged to follow some simple advice to ensure that they do not become the victim of carbon monoxide poisoning --- also known as the "silent killer".
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, highly toxic gas that can kill in a few minutes. Those poisoned by just low levels of carbon monoxide can also develop long term chronic health problems.
People exposed to carbon monoxide may experience headaches, dizziness, nausea and tiredness. High concentrations can cause people to become confused or collapse.
If you are suffering from any of the symptoms, turn off the appliance immediately. Move to a well ventilated area and open your windows. You should start to feel better, but if you don't, call NHS 111 Service or 999 in an emergency.
You can help to protect yourself by ensuring that your fuel burning appliances are serviced every year. Make sure that the chimney is swept once or twice a year and instal a carbon monoxide alarm in your home.
