PRESS RELEASE FROM THE POLICE COMMISSIONER FOR MERSEYSIDE

 For immediate release

£45,000 released to keep young people safe over autumn half term

Community groups which work to divert young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour during the busy autumn half-term are being invited to bid for a small cash boost, thanks to Merseyside’s Police Commissioner.

Jane Kennedy has announced that she releasing a new round of funding from the Police Property Act Fund (PPA), which allows money raised from the sale of unclaimed stolen goods or property recovered by the police to be used for good causes.

It is the tenth time the Commissioner has asked community organisations, charities and groups to apply for grants of up to £5,000 for grassroots initiatives which are working to help young people to make the right choices. A total of £45,000 is available from the fund for one-off grants for organisations which are committed to improving community safety, reducing crime or supporting victims.

Jane has already awarded nearly £378,000 through the PPA to organisations that are making a difference in their communities. Since July 2015, the fund has been used to concentrate on youth engagement initiatives. Last year, funding was awarded to 23 community groups enabling more than 7,500 young people take part in fun, safe, organised activities over the Halloween and Bonfire Night period.

Jane said: "I am pleased to once again be able to open up the Police Property Act Fund for bids of up to £5,000 to organisations which are working to make their communities safer and better places to live by engaging with young people.

“Halloween and Bonfire Night are a time of fun and excitement for many people across Merseyside, but sometimes the fun can get out of hand and sadly some communities still do experience a rise in criminal and anti-social behaviour during this holiday. Historically, it is a particularly busy time for the police and the fire service.

“Through these grants, I want to help alleviate these issues and prevent local young people from making mistakes they may regret in the future. Once a young person gets a criminal record it can blight their future prospects. By using these grants to fund a wide range of fun, safe, organised activities I hope we can help to prevent young people from getting drawn into any activities which could become intimidating, anti-social or even dangerous to other members of the community.

“These projects will support the excellent diversionary work carried out by Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, ensuring that young people can enjoy the autumn festivities in a safe and enjoyable way which is properly supervised.”

Jane added: “Local people know their communities best. They know what works when engaging with their young people and I am looking forward to reviewing their ideas and initiatives for ensuring everyone can have a safe and fun Halloween.”

The PPA fund is administered by the Community Foundation for Merseyside, (CFM) on behalf of the Commissioner. CFM holds funds from individuals and organisations as donors who wish to support deserving causes in Merseyside.

All applications must be submitted online via the Community Foundation for Merseyside by 4pm on 30th August 2019.

Please visit their website http://www.cfmerseyside.org.uk/funds/police-property-act-fund to apply.

White Ribbon UK

White-ribbon-e1564411795925

Knowsley Town Council would like to thank Aaliyah Rugg from White Ribbon UK for her presentation on the work that they do.

WHAT IS WHITE RIBBON?

It is an international organisation aiming to end male violence against women once and for all. The UK campaign was founded in 2005.

The aim is to ultimately work with men and boys to challenge male cultures which lead to harassment, abuse and violence.

Men become volunteer ambassadors and women become champions and they aim to promote a culture of equality and respect and call out poor behaviour.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THE UK

Two women a week are killed by a current or former partner (crime survey for England and Wales 2017).

Six out of seven victims of DV are women (crown prosecution service 2017).

Nine out ten defendants are men.

13.2% of men and 28.9% of women and aged 16 to 59 had experienced some form of domestic abuse since the age of 16 – according to Man Kind figures march 2019.

For every three victims of domestic abuse, two will be female, one will be male

In 17/18, 8.9% of men (equivalent to 1.4 million men) and 21.8% of women (3.6 million women) said they had experienced partner abuse (non-sexual) since the age of 16.

 WHY?

There’s more to DV then physical violence. Abuse comes in many forms such as emotional which can be anything from coercive control and degrading language and bullying. But there’s also sexual abuse and economical abuse. It’s also important to remember the impact of abuse on children – they could go on to be abusers themselves or turn to drugs for comfort.

You may be thinking this national campaign has nothing to do with your area, but you couldn’t be more wrong. No-one knows what goes on behind closed doors. I can 100 per cent guarantee right now that so many people in this town alone will be in an abusive relationship and may not even know it. Both men and women that is.

Take me for example. I was in an abusive relationship and had no idea what was going on until I started this job and was introduced to the campaign. I was told what to wear, what to do and who to be friends with. I was even told not to go to a certain town. No-one would have known what I was going through and even though that relationship has ended, I still feel the effects of that today and am still struggling with my own mental health from that.

The people of your area need your help and if they see the council taking action, more people are likely to come forward. We need to raise awareness and tell people that abuse in any form will not be tolerated.

The campaign will better prepare the clerk and councillors and everyone else in ways of identifying abuse and reporting it if appropriate.

Becoming fully accredited will also form an integral part of the campaign. It allows access to training materials and branding and you receive organisational support.

It promotes a positive message within the community that you don’t tolerate abuse and you encourage people to report it.

The council will be leading by example and promote an environment of tolerance and respect. A better awareness of DA by councillors also promotes a safer community for everyone.

LOCALLY

People often won’t pick up the phone, either through embarrassment or lack of knowledge so accreditation just means that you can actively be seen in your community as supporting the campaign. As much signposting as you can get, through White Ribbon or the MARAC of the Freedom Programme ensures you guys are doing your bit to help those in need.

Funds awarded last year for accommodation for those in need.

There’s also the tying of the ribbons around the tree in places like Connah’s Quay (North Wales) and White Ribbon Day which is November 25 – this marks 16 days of action. The public will physically be able to see what you are doing during the those days specifically.

Domestic abuse bill introduced this year which will place a legal duty on councils to offer secure homes for those fleeing violence and their children, and proposes creating a dedicated domestic abuse commissioner. It is also be the first government to define DA to include financial, coercive control and manipulating behaviour.

In Wales – Carl Sargeant introduced the violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence bill 2015  - but why stop there?

HOW TO DO IT

You have to contact white ribbon and complete an action plan and then they get back to you with a price based on the size of your organisation.

Stockbridge Village Residents Take Part In A Gardening Workshop

Gardening-Workshop

Residents in Stockbridge Village explored the world of gardening and developed their skills in a recent gardening masterclass.

Preparations for this year's Knowsley Flower Show were well underway at the workshop where the show's committee shared their expertise in growing plants and vegetables. From planting seeds to nurturing them in the best way, the gardening novices were shown how to grow and keep cucumber plants, tomato plants, and more. Residents could choose to enter these plants in the show or decide to use the tips and tricks they were taught to grow their own outside of the session. The workshop wasn't all focused on entering the Knowsley Flower; those who attended discovered all of the benefits of growing own produce.

The team from Knowsley's incredible Edible community growing project came along to encourage people to grow their own food which can help you to eat more healthy and save money on food bills. The workshop took place at Craig's Community Centre,          Little Moss Hey,  Stockbridge Village and was possible due to the funding from ForHousing.

The community garden at Craig's Community Centre is currently undergoing a renovation and the team are eager for the local community to get involved. The garden  is open to the public every day of the week 2pm-8pm. If you'd like some support with developing your growing skills or just to look, come and see the Incredible Edible team and their volunteers at the garden every Friday between  2pm & 8pm until the end of November 2019 or go visit their web site Incredible Edible.

You can also contact Annie MacLean, Community Development Officer on annie.maclean@forhousing.co.uk to find out what is going on in your community or if you have an idea of what you would like to see happen.

Knowsley Community College

Knowsley Community College launches new dental course

Knowsley Community College has launched an exciting new Dental Nursing course in response to the growing demand of industry professionals.

The level 3 Advanced Diploma in Dental Nursing will help students take their first steps towards a career in the dental industry. The qualification recognised by the General Dental Council, will allow students to work with industry specialists focusing on direct, chair side work and providing support during a range of dental treatments to gain a strong understanding of dental equipment, instruments and materials.

The dental industry is an increasingly competitive and expanding profession and in the UK alone is worth around £9 billion. Dental nurses assist dentists with all aspects of patient care, from sterilising instruments and recording patient information to passing instruments and participating during advanced, specialist treatment.

Clare Webster, head of curriculum, said: “Dental nursing has become an increasingly popular career choice over the past few years and this new course is an excellent opportunity for those who are looking to launch a career in dentistry”.

The knowledge and theory behind dentistry will be provided once a week within the classroom at Knowsley Community College. In addition to this, students will gain valuable work experience within a local dental practice four days a week.

Students who successfully complete the course will be able to register with the General Dental Council (GDC) and be open to a range of work options and settings including careers in general dental practices, hospitals, community dental services and universities.

For more information about the Dental Nursing course or to apply, please visit www.knowsleycollege.ac.uk/dentalnursing
