This initiative is an Arts Council England funded project created to bring exciting and cultural activities to our libraries.

Floristry

If you love flowers and like the sound of floristry, why not take up the opportunity to learn the arts and skills of the craft from an expert florist? You don’t need to bring anything with you and you can take home whatever you make. All FACE asks for is a small donation which will be confirmed when you book.

Friday 15th February 2019 is Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, a nationally recognised day to raise awareness of fuel poverty and the importance of living in a warm and safe home.

What is fuel poverty?

Fuel poverty is when a household is unable to afford to heat their home to an adequate temperature. This is influenced by three factors; low-incomes, high energy costs, and energy inefficient housing.

A shocking 4.5 million UK households are in fuel poverty and living in cold, damp and unsafe homes. The effects of such can be detrimental to people’s health, quality of life and wider communities.

Some tips to help you reduce fuel poverty

  • Switch your energy supplier to get the best deal. If you have been with the same energy suppliers for a long time, you could be losing money every year by not being on the correct tariff.
  • Read your meter's and check your bills and know exactly how much you have to budget for each month. Reading the meter is the only way to make sure you're paying for what you actually use. Most energy providers have useful guides on their website telling you how to read your meter if you're not sure.
  • Find out what help is available to you. If you're struggling to pay your bills speak to your energy provider in the first instance. They may be able to switch you to a more affordable plan.

Tips to be more energy efficient

  • Insulate and draught proof your home – it will make your home warmer and help to reduce your energy bills
  • Set your heating thermostat to 18 °C
  • Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat inside your rooms
  • Make sure that that your radiators are not obstructed by furniture this will prevent the room getting up to temperature meaning you will burn more fuel
  • Use energy saving light bulbs such as LED's where possible and remember to turn the light off when you leave the room
  • Have your heating and cooking appliances serviced regularly
  • Switch off any non-essential appliances when they're not in use

If you require any further advice or assistance then you can contact the Council's Energy Officer directly on 0151 443 5817

The day is coordinated by End Fuel Poverty Coalition (EFPC) member, National Energy Action (NEA) and concludes the Warm and Safe Homes Campaign.

STAYING WELL IN KNOWSLEY

The ‘Staying Well in Knowsley’ guide, giving vital information about a range of community-based health and social care services, is now available from a number of locations across the borough.

At this time of year, more people suffer from a range of illnesses, such as colds and flu that result in unnecessary visits to hospital. There are now a range of community-based help and support services available to residents in Knowsley to support them safely at home and following discharge from hospital.

The ‘Staying Well in Knowsley’ guide is available from public buildings, including libraries, council one-stop shops, GP surgeries and walk-in centres. It outlines the range of services on offer, as well as offering helpful advice about staying well during the winter period, and lists everything from information about walk-in centres in Knowsley, to the Falls and Wellbeing Service, Knowsley Urgent Response Team and the Urgent Care GP appointment service.

There’s also information about Community Navigators who help people access local activities and services to promote health and wellbeing, and useful contacts for the team who provide aids and equipment to help people stay safe and independent at home.

Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care Cllr Sean Donnelly said:

“There’s a lot of community-based support available in Knowsley for people facing health and social care issues over the winter period. This is particularly the case for more vulnerable residents who often have a number of health conditions that, with the right support at or near to home, could avoid a visit or admission to hospital. This guide is a really useful one-stop-shop of the support services available to those who might need some help staying well and independent at home.”

THE WHITECHAPEL CENTRE NEWSLETTER

Welcome to The Whitechapel Centre newsletter of 2019. We hope you enjoy it!

Firstly, we would like to say a big "THANK YOU" to everyone who has helped make this Christmas special for our clients. We have been overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity. We couldn't do it without you and we are grateful to everyone who has volunteered their time, donated goods or fundraised for us.

Your wonderful donations enabled us to reach out and support 1,149 people in December alone.

This included:

  • Resolved housing issues for 679 people
  • 83 people stayed in our supported accommodation based services
  • Helped 160 people find and move into new accommodation
  • Providing basic needs (food, showers, fresh clothing) for 227 people
  • 78 people staying in Labre House on Christmas Eve and were our guest on Christmas Day.

We are looking forward to helping even more people find a route out of homelessness in 2019. As always, there are plenty of ways you can help us end homelessness for people. Read on for more news, information on volunteering opportunities and our exciting fundraising events.

Rough Sleeper Count 2018

Today the national figures results of the Rough Sleeper Count are published. Liverpool's count, which took place on a night in November 2018, found 15 rough sleepers on the city's streets. This is a significant decrease from the 33 seen out in 2017. The figures are a snap shot of a single night and while the figures show an increase in rough sleeping in most major cities nationally, they do show a very notable reduction in the number of people sleeping rough in Liverpool.

This reduction is a result of the commitment and persistence of our staff, the resources that the city is investing, the open access to Labre House every night and strong partnership working with other agencies and charities. However, we believe just one person sleeping rough is too many, and we are working to find sustainable solutions for all.

Since the Rough Sleeper Count in November we have had further successes with some of the most entrenched rough sleepers who were in tents around the city. Almost all have now accepted offers of accommodation and come indoors. This is just the start of their journey out of homelessness and ongoing support is essential to help them sustain their accommodation.

We're pleased to be returning to the wonderful Liverpool Cathedral for our family-friendly sleepout on Friday 5th April.

Everyone needs to have a place to call home - a nice comfy bed, hot food to eat, somewhere you can watch television, play games or read a book. Unfortunately, not everyone in our city has this.

Liverpool Cathedral and The Whitechapel Centre are working hard with those people who need a place to call home and help them reach their full potential. We need your help, by spending ONE night away sleeping in Liverpool Cathedral and raise money, enabling us to help as many people as possible.

All you need to do to take part is bring a responsible adult and ask your family and friends to sponsor you to raise a minimum of £50.00.

The Liverpool Cathedral Sleepout is on Friday 5th April at Liverpool Cathedral. It costs £5.00* per person.
