World Diabetes Day On Thursday!

World Diabetes Day On Thursday!

World Diabetes Day takes place on Thursday 14 November 2013. World Diabetes Day, on the 14 November every year, has grown from humble beginnings to become a globally-celebrated event to increase awareness about diabetes.

Thursday is a significant day in the diabetes calendar because it marks the birthday of the the man who co-discovered insulin, Frederick Banting. Banting discovered insulin with his colleague, Charles Best, in 1922. World Diabetes Day is internationally recognised and is now an official United Nations Day.

World Diabetes Day was jointly introduced by the World Health Organisation and the International Diabetes Federation. The global diabetes awareness campaign was introduced amidst concern over an escalating diabetes epidemic.

Each year, World Diabetes Day, which is coordinated by the International Diabetes Federation, carries a particular theme. Since 2009, that theme has been education.

You can support World Diabetes Day in a number of ways. This support can range from simply wearing blue on the day to financially contributing to those organisations researching, treating and preventing diabetes.
