Make sure you don't fall victim to the winter vomiting bug or Norovirus
Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. It can be very unpleasant, but usually goes away in about two days. The main symptoms are feeling sick, diarrhoea and vomiting, but you may also have a high temperature (38C or above), a headache and aching arms and legs. The symptoms start suddenly within one to two days of being infected.
You can usually treat yourself or your child at home and should start to feel better in two to three days. The most important thing is to have lots of fluids to avoid dehydration - just take small sips if you feel sick - and take paracetamol if you're in discomfort.
Stay off work until the symptoms have stopped for two days as this is when you're most infectious. Also avoid visiting anyone vulnerable or in hospital during this time.
You can catch norovirus from close contact with someone with norovirus, touching surfaces or objects that have the virus on them, then touching your mouth or eating food that's been prepared or handled by someone with norovirus
To help avoid spreading the infection wash your hands with soap and water frequently (alcohol hand gels will not kill norovirus), wash any clothing or bedding that has poo or vomit on it separately on a hot wash and clean toilet seats, flush handles, taps, surfaces and door handles every day.
